Can I accept another government position at a higher grade?
I am reviewing an offer for a position within the federal government though I have not yet heard from other agencies that I’ve interviewed with. I anticipate an offer from the other agencies but I still cannot be certain that I may received one. With that said, I want to take the first offer, which is at a lower GS level than the others.
If the other agencies offer a position to me, can I take a position at a higher grade once I’ve accepted a lower GS position with another agency?
Yes, you can, if you haven’t yet started working.
If you receive another offer and haven’t yet begun working, call your HR person and tell him/her that you received another offer more beneficial to you. No biggie. They’ll select someone else.
If you have already started working, you can’t be appointed to another position for 90 days, if you were selected from an announcement that was open to the public (rather than being restricted to status candidates).
So you might want to hold off on that first job offer for a little while.
