Why do people like to follow really strict religions with a lot of rules?
I’m a pretty laid back country guy that likes fun. But I want to know why anyone would choose to be part of a really strict religion. People have a choice … are they that afraid that if they drink, smoke, have sex and on and on they’ll be sent to hell? And I’m not an atheist, I’m Christian but I believe God loves me the way I am.
People who think one is sent to hell due to their actions do not understand the concept of grace.
Additionally, two of the activities you mentioned are not sins in the sense of morality. One might consider that smoking is a sin inasmuch as eating a double cheeseburger is a sin. Moderate consumption of alcohol is certainly not a sin.
Consider the * real * sins about which God is concerned. Anger, bitterness, jealousy, amenity, selfishness, greed and worry. These are the sins of the heart … and very hard to root out.
Many Christians will proudly say they don’t smoke, drink or swear. Big whoop. Their hearts are black as tar in regards to the aforementioned.
Work on those things and you will find your life changing more than you ever imagined.
