Having your information product arrive safely in the hands of your customer should be of significant concern. Almost nothing is more depressing then receiving a package that you can hear things flopping around in even before you’ve opened the box.
Obviously your chances of having a product returned for a refund increase significantly if your customer opens a box and find discs askew or bent or ripped pages in a manual. This is a nightmare you don’t want have happen to you.
Your fulfillment partner should take special care to make sure your product arrives in mint condition to the end user. Individual components should be protected appropriately so damage doesn’t occur during the shipping process. We’ve seen products sold for as much as $2000 that arrived in such poor condition they looked they weren’t even worth $20.
Here’s some miscellaneous packaging hints if you’re doing your own product fulfillment or to make sure your fulfillment partner is following if you’re outsourcing.
1. Make sure the shipping box is properly sized for the product. The product should fit snugly into the outer box, but not so tightly someone needs to use a pry bar to get it out. A properly sized box will also reduce the amount of void fill that may be needed, saving both on product costs and the environment.
2. If bubble wrapping manuals or disc cases (which we highly recommend for protective purposes) make sure the bubble side of the bubble wrap is away from the product. Inward facing bubbles can leave marks on the clear plastic overlay of binders or disc cases.
3. If a manual is included in your product we recommend that, if it contains more than 50 sheets of paper, that you do NOT ship the pages already inserted on the rings of the binder. Shifting and tearing of pages can occur during shipping and also the binder rings themselves can be damaged. The pages should be shrink wrapped with a firm cardboard backing (to prevent bending) and the end user will place the pages within the binder himself.
