How do I prepare my car for One Shot Paint?
How do I prepare the surface of my car to be painted with One Shot Paint? Do I need to prime it? I have a buffer, and I plan on doing that first. Does it need a protective coat after? Do I have to sand the surface or anything? I would like to keep the car color for background.
I searched the internet before coming here, and there was really no information on the preparation, only information about preservation and the actual painting/drying process.
To prepare the old paint for a new coat, assuming you don’t have any dents to fix, wash it thoroughly with TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate), ½ cup TSP to a gallon very warm water. Allow the solution to sit on the surface for a few minutes then rinse with warm water. Repeated rinsing might be necessary to remove it all.
It is available at most hardware stores and many supermarkets (with cleaning supplies). It is a white powder and is a cleaning agent, stain remover and degreaser and is commonly used to prepare surfaces for painting.
In a strong solution it will de-gloss the old paint, making a Very Good base for the new paint. Wear rubber gloves. Do not allow the trisodium phosphate solution to touch the skin or make contact with your eyes.
