US Navy Hospital Corpsman Questions ?
How hard is HM -A- School?
Im going in as FTS or Full Time Support which by my understanding, It is still considered as going on Active Duty but being in the reserves at the same time?
I heard that advancement in the HM rating is really hard since you have to compete with other HM which I dont mind at all but is it true that if you dont advance in a certain time, the navy will kick you out?
How hard is it to become a Navy Doctor? And how hard is to apply for the STA-21 program?
Sorry for all the questions and I really appreciate your answers.
I want save lives and make a difference for the better, and this Career is the closest to being Superman. Hence I want to be a Navy Corpsman.
1: essentially correct. you are treated as Active duty for all intents and purposes but all your training/pay comes out of the RESERVES budget. your duty station will most likely be a reserve Unit or one of the Hospital ships.
2; correct. under both Perform to Serve and High year tenure it’s up or out. you can only be at each paygrade so long before you MUST get promoted, or be discharged.
3: damned hard. you need your Undergrad degree, your medical degree and have done at least some residency/internship before you can apply for a commission. the Average Sailor applies 4 times to STA-21 before they are accepted.
